Lakewood Hospital Unveils New Geriatric Neurological Health Pavilion

On Thursday, August 26, Lakewood Hospital unveiled The Harold C. Schott Pavilion for Geriatric Neurological Health. In December 2009, Lakewood Hospital Foundation received a $1 million gift from The Harold C. Schott Foundation to expand and improve neurological and geriatric services focused on brain health.

On hand to help with the unveiling was world-renowned Alzheimer’s researcher and neurologist Jeffrey L. Cummings, MD, Director of research and operations at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Cleveland and Las Vegas. He will play an integral role in developing programs that will be offered at Lakewood Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus and in Las Vegas.

The Harold C. Schott Pavilion for Geriatric Neurological Health is part of Lakewood Hospital’s Vision for Tomorrow strategic plan to meet the evolving needs of the community and to improve the patient experience. The plan places a particular focus on enhancing and integrating the hospital’s SeniorCare Services and Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute at Lakewood Hospital.

“I look forward to collaborating with the geriatric and neurological specialists at Lakewood Hospital to optimize patient care through teamwork,” said Dr. Cummings. Dr. Cummings stressed that new treatments must be found to enable optimal ways for caring for affected patients and their caregivers.

The major focus of the program at Lakewood Hospital will be to encourage patient participation in clinical trials, which will help develop new treatments options for Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Cummings emphasized the importance of providing a patient-centered program that provides high-quality, comprehensive services in a convenient location for patients and their family members.

Michael Modic, MD, Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute played an integral role in bringing the Neurological Institute to Lakewood Hospital. “This is an historic night for Lakewood Hospital,” said Dr. Modic. “This is the first philanthropic gift of $1M or more in Lakewood Hospital’s history and represents our commitment to providing high quality neurological care for seniors and caregivers in our community.”

“Lakewood Hospital has been committed to caring for the aging population for generations,” said Janice Murphy, president of Lakewood and Fairview Hospitals. “The programs delivered through the Harold C. Schott Pavilion for Geriatric Neurological Health is taking it a giant step further. Having the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of life through all stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is priceless. The work done through The Harold C. Schott Pavilion for Geriatric Neurological Health will further support Lakewood Hospital in providing the best care, treatment and experience for our geriatric patients and their caregivers."

Break 4 Kids

More than 80 kids are hit by cars in the US every day. Lakewood Early Childhood PTA (LECPTA) aims to reduce such accidents through its Brake 4 Kids™ speed awareness campaign. Brake 4 Kids™ signs remind motorists to slow down now that school has resumed, and pedestrian motor vehicle injuries in Lakewood have decreased since the program’s inception.

The free signs are available from Geiger’s, First Federal of Lakewood, or Steve Barry Buick. Signs will also be available at the Lakewood Community Festival at Madison Park on Saturday, September 11 from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Brake 4 Kids™ signs may be posted on tree lawns August 25 through September 30. After September 30, signs may be displayed in front lawns or saved for next year.

Warren Road Getting a Re-Do

Starting tomorrow, Tuesday August 31st, the City of Lakewood will be resurfacing Warren Road from Detroit Avenue north to Lakewood Heights Boulevard.

The existing deteriorated asphalt pavement surface will be removed by a milling process to a depth of approximately three (3) inches. The asphalt cuttings will be collected for recycling. The resulting surface will be drivable, but rough. Then an intermediate layer of asphalt will be applied, followed by a final layer of asphalt, restoring the original pavement surface.

The construction is expected to last 45 Calendar Days. Access to driveways will be maintained, but some inconveniences will occur: rough roads and pavement, on-street parking bans, travel delays, dust and noise. Thank you for your patience while we work to improve the city streets.

Also, refuse will be collected earlier on Warren Road during the construction period, so please make sure that refuse is set to the curb before 6:30am on your collection day.

The contractor will control the project and be responsible for the street during all activities, and will maintain responsibility for all aspects of scheduling, safety, traffic control and security. The City of Lakewood will supervise all work being completed. Any questions or comments should be directed to the Division of Engineering at engineering@lakewoodoh.net or contact 216-529-6692.

Lakewood = Coolest Suburb in USA

Travel & Leisure Magazine named Lakewood among its top ten “Coolest Suburbs Worth a Visit.” The magazine touts Lakewood’s “well-established (and thriving) nightlife and gastronomic scene along Detroit Avenue,” noting that Lakewood has been on hipsters’ radar for some time.

The City of Lakewood has been noticed by other national publications including BusinessWeek and This Old House Magazine, finding Lakewood tops for raising a family and buying an older home, respectively. The city has the highest population density in the region, and has among the highest concentration of young adults and first time homebuyers.

Madison Planning Project Takes Off

Nearly fifty residents, stakeholders and interested citizens attend this past Saturday's community design event at Madison Park. Hosted by the City's Department of Planning and Development and facilitated by the consulting team from Dimit Architects, this creative, hands-on event gave residents that opportunity to talk with the project team directly to start crafting designs for neighborhood improvements while enjoying a cook-out, raffle and kid friendly activities. Building on last year's community based concept plan called the Birdtown Action Plan, this second phase will take the project from concept to design development by the end of this year.

Then, the city will take these designs to attract funding for improvements that include but are not limited to neighborhood identity signs, street lighting, pedestrian and bicycle safety and public art. Future public workshops will give residents additional opportunities to help designs and be a partner in shaping the future of the neighborhood.

Special thanks to the City's community partners, Madison Avenue Merchants Association, Friends of Madison Park, Lakewood Public Library, Cleveland Restoration Society, Lakewood Christian Service Center, Councilwoman Mary Louise Madigan (Ward 4), and to the event sponsors Waterbury Coach House, Sugar Bears, TJ's Butcher Block and The Winchester.

Birdtown / Madison East Planning Event

Please join us for the Birdtown Madison Community Action public meeting:
Saturday August 21st
11:00-1:00 in Madison Park (north side near the pool)

The community meeting is hosted by the City of Lakewood to begin the next step in finalizing the design of improvements for the east end of Madison Avenue. Building on the community work in 2009 that resulted in the Birdtown Action Plan, the City was able to secure a $50,000 grant from the Northeastern Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) to retain a consultant to develop the final design of improvements such as improved pedestrian spaces, street furniture and trees, public art, improved transit stops and neighborhood signage.

The consulting team led by Lakewood's Dimit Architects will facilitate the event and consists of designers, planners, public artists and marketing professionals. Team Dimit was were awarded the project through a competitive proposal process this past Spring, selected from a dozen firms by a panel of city staff, neighborhood residents and stakeholders. Dimit is headquartered here in Lakewood and has extensive experience in commercial, residential and historic design as well as urban planning.

We need your input to take the next step in advancing this neighborhood. For more information or if you have questions contact Planning and Development at 216.529.6634 or planning@lakewoodoh.net
