Schott Pavilion for Geriatric Neurological Health is part of Lakewood Hospital’s Vision for Tomorrow strategic plan to meet the evolving needs of the community and to improve the patient experience. The plan places a particular focus on enhancing and integrating the hospital’s SeniorCare Services and Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute at Lakewood Hospital.

“I look forward to collaborating with the geriatric and neurological specialists at Lakewood Hospital to optimize patient care through teamwork,” said Dr. Cummings. Dr. Cummings stressed that new treatments must be found to enable optimal ways for caring for affected patients and their caregivers.

The major focus of the program at Lakewood Hospital will be to encourage patient participation in clinical trials, which will help develop new treatments options for Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Cummings emphasized the importance of providing a patient-centered program that provides high-quality, comprehensive services in a convenient location for patients and their family members.

Michael Modic, MD, Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Neurological Institute played an integral role in bringing the Neurological Institute to Lakewood Hospital. “This is an historic night for Lakewood Hospital,” said Dr. Modic. “This is the first philanthropic gift of $1M or more in Lakewood Hospital’s history and represents our commitment to providing high quality neurological care for seniors and caregivers in our community.”

“Lakewood Hospital has been committed to caring for the aging population for generations,” said Janice Murphy, president of Lakewood and Fairview Hospitals. “The programs delivered through the Harold C. Schott Pavilion for Geriatric Neurological Health is taking it a giant step further. Having the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of life through all stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is priceless. The work done through The Harold C. The asphalt cuttings will be collected for recycling. The resulting surface will be drivable, but rough. Then an intermediate layer of asphalt will be applied, followed by a final layer of asphalt, restoring the original pavement surface.

The construction is expected to last 45 Calendar Days. Access to driveways will be maintained, but some inconveniences will occur: rough roads and pavement, on-street parking bans, travel delays, dust and noise. Thank you for your patience while we work to improve the city streets.

Also, refuse will be collected earlier on Warren Road during the construction period, so please make sure that refuse is set to the curb before 6:30am on your collection day.

The contractor will control the project and be responsible for the street during all activities, and will maintain responsibility for all aspects of scheduling, safety, traffic control and security. The City of Lakewood will supervise all work being completed. Hosted by the City's Department of Planning and Development and facilitated by the consulting team from Dimit Architects, this creative, hands-on event gave residents that opportunity to talk with the project team directly to start crafting designs for neighborhood improvements while enjoying a cook-out, raffle and kid friendly activities. Building on last year's community based concept plan called the Birdtown Action Plan, this second phase will take the project from concept to design development by the end of this year.

Then, the city will take these designs to attract funding for improvements that include but are not limited to neighborhood identity signs, street lighting, pedestrian and bicycle safety and public art. Future public workshops will give residents additional opportunities to help designs and be a partner in shaping the future of the neighborhood.

Special thanks to the City's community partners, Madison Avenue Merchants Association, Friends of Madison Park, Lakewood Public Library, Cleveland Restoration Society, Lakewood Christian Service Center, Councilwoman Mary Louise Madigan (Ward 4), and to the event sponsors Waterbury Coach House, Sugar Bears, TJ's Butcher Block and The Winchester.

For more information visit the City's website at www.onelakewood.com/birdtown

Birdtown / Madison East Planning Event

Please join us for the Birdtown Madison Community Action public meeting:
Saturday August 21st
11:00-1:00 in Madison Park (north side near the pool)

The community meeting is hosted by the City of Lakewood to begin the next step in finalizing the design of improvements for the east end of Madison Avenue. The offices and storefronts featured in our commercial corridors are the perfect spot for entrepreneurs and growing businesses. Lakewood’s population density and young demographics make our city rich with home-based businesses bursting at the seams.

We want to help grow your enterprise in Lakewood. We want to bring your ideas and talents to our downtown. We want to be your customers and your partners.

While the city has a number of programs to attract and grow businesses, we want to branch out and assist businesses that are still at the idea stage. To grow Lakewood’s base of entrepreneurs and demonstrate a commitment to growing business, we are proposing an Entrepreneur in Residence program.

In partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, Pillars and LakewoodAlive, the city is committing to offering a stipend-funded Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR), and we’re looking for proposals for programs, organizations and especially individuals who are willing to commit their time and resources to like-minded entrepreneurs to help build business from the ground up – in Lakewood.

The successful EIR will be an individual or organization that will assist Lakewood residents and businesses in helping to bring ideas to the marketplace. The EIR will provide counsel on business planning, conducting due diligence and cultivating financial resources. Assisted by the EIR’s community partners, the EIR will be responsible for identifying and attracting participating entrepreneurs, emphasizing students and second-career professionals to EIR programming.

Help us spread the word. We are receiving proposals and resumes through noon on Friday August 27th. Just like all entrepreneurial ventures, this might not work. Without the right people, the project can’t succeed. We’ll interview a couple interested parties to hear their final touches on a successful EIR program that can be started before autumn.

Please send email, proposals and questions to planning@lakewoodoh.net. Snail mail can be sent to:
Planning and Development
Attention: Entrepreneur in Residence
12650 Detroit Avenue
Lakewood, Ohio 44107

A short RFP is available here.

Clifton Boulevard Design Public Meeting

The next public meeting for the design and engineering phase for the Clifton Boulevard Enhancement Project has been scheduled:

Wednesday, August 11th
6 - 8 pm
Garfield Middle School

We will review the 30% submission from the designers and engineers (which means that they are one third there). Those cameras are there to detect the presence of vehicles and activate the signals to change (or not change). They are more reliable than the older style “loop detectors.” Loop indicators rely on the presence of (lots of) steel to tell the signals that a car is there, so motorcycles and bicycles are sometimes ‘left out of the loop’ (pun intended).

The video camera detectors detect the presence of a vehicle and relay that information to the traffic control system. They do not detect speeders or cars running red lights. But, the police do, so drive safe.

Lakewood Arts Festival This Saturday

The 33rd Annual Lakewood Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Detroit Avenue between Marlowe and Elmwood Avenues. Snail mail can be sent to:
Planning and Development
Attention: Entrepreneur in Residence
12650 Detroit Avenue
Lakewood, Ohio 44107

A short RFP is available here.

City Offers First City-Rehabbed Homes for Sale

This week, the City of Lakewood is offering for sale the first properties it has rehabilitated as part of the city’s housing initiative.

The properties located at 1598 Wyandotte and 1300 Andrews were the worst on the street. The city targeted properties that were abandoned, foreclosed and where profits would be unlikely for would-be property re-developers.

At no cost to the city’s general fund dollars, Lakewood purchased and rehabilitated the properties. Now, the homes feature new kitchens and baths, new appliances, restored floors and trim, new roofs, driveways and HVAC, updated electric and plumbing, dry basements and other improvements. To retain the historic Lakewood charm, first floor hardwoods were restored and the City consulted with the Cleveland Restoration Society to ensure the color selections met the age and character of the houses.

The city earned federal funding for the initiative. To date, sixteen properties have been acquired to demolish or rehab. Other properties not owned by the City will be demolished to rid neighborhoods of nuisance properties.

Federal guidelines require that homes are sold to owner occupants who will responsibly manage home ownership, and other federal requirements. All the effort from the community to develop our Park System Strategic plan over the past year is already having a positive impact.

The new outfield fence work is complete. What a difference! You can now walk all the way around the park and it makes the Kauffman seem bigger and better already.

BEFORE

AFTER

2. The big dead tree next to little links will be removed in the next few days by the City Forestry crew.

3. Parks and Forestry crews will also begin doing some initial weed and overgrowth removal as well as tree pruning within little links. The goal is to start cleaning out the space while preserving as many healthy, mature trees as possible. This will be a multi-step process Future steps will include taking down the fence and removal of the concrete fairways and greens.

4. The trees at the bottom of the sled hill near the entrance to the park were pruned last week improving visibility into the park toward the playground.

5. The large pile of debris next to the LEAF garden was removed by the Parks Division last week.

6. City staff and the Police had a productive meeting with the Outdoor Basketball Committee last week to talk about next steps in managing the pilot program and getting things underway in the next few weeks.

It was good to see so many kids using the playground yesterday.

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; Over the next couple weeks, the following streets will have the railroad crossings replaced. Typically, crews take about three days to complete the work, which results in a smoother, safer driving surface and more stable train crossing. Work will also take place on the weekends.
Wednesday July 14th
Edwards

Friday July 16th
Bonnieview, Westlake and Cranford

Saturday July 17th (or when Edwards is complete)
Ethel

Monday July 19th
Summit, Lakeland, Gladys, Marlowe and St.Charles (might be delayed one week)

Wednesday July 21
Cove, Beach and Fry. The parade is scheduled to step off on Sunday July 4, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. on Lake Avenue at Kenneth Drive and conclude at Lakewood Park.

Virginia Marti Veith grew up with a passion for quality fabrics and fashion. Her father was a furrier, owning a store in Cleveland. Early on, Mrs. Veith understood that quality sewing and construction skills would open up a world of design possibilities for her. She began studying fashion in New York City, then moved on to Paris to study the Haute Couture method of design, with its emphasis on quality fabrics and customizing detail.

When Mrs. Veith moved back to the States several years later, she opened her own bridal salon. Unable to find expert staff, Mrs. Veith began training new students. Five students attended her first Fashion Design class at the new Virginia Marti College of Fashion and Art in April 1966. In 1970, the coursework evolved into a Fashion Design Associate Degree Program.

Virginia Marti College of Art and Design is a nationally accredited, two-year career college for students who are ready to advance their education and careers in fashion design, fashion merchandising, interior design, graphic design and digital media. Specialized, project-based curriculum and hands-on training prepare aspiring designers to compete in creative fields with the most dynamic growth potential. Virginia Marti College moved to current location in Lakewood in 1985, with major renovations and additions completed in 2003. This site was custom designed to include a gallery, which showcases the art and design work of the students.

“We are pleased to honor Virginia Marti Veith for all she has given to the Lakewood community” said Mayor FitzGerald. “We are proud to have her serve as Grand Marshall of the Fourth of July Parade.”

Joining in the parade will be musical favorites, the Lakewood High School Ranger Marching Band, St. Edward High School Band, the Lochaber Pipe Band and Red Hackle Pipe Band.

After the parade, festivities will continue in Lakewood Park with games, food, activities and information provided by several of Lakewood’s community organizations. George Usher Field at Madison Park will be getting a significant upgrade over the next week two weeks.

The City is undertaking a number of improvements to modernize this beloved softball and little league baseball. The old below grade dug outs are being removed and new at grade team seating will be provided behind the new fences along first and third baselines.

Most importantly, a regulation height backstop will be installed to replace the worn out and undersized existing fence. Additionally, the City has partnered with the Board of Education's Recreation Department and a contractor is on site this week to regrade the infield to improve drainage and level the playing surface. Crews will make every effort to make the improvements quickly and not disrupt play but after the two weeks of work Usher Field will be the modern, high-quality facility deserved by our softball and baseball participants.

Summer Band Concerts Start This Sunday

The City of Lakewood is pleased to announce the 2010 schedule for its Summer Band Concert Series.
